Joy of Lavender

Lavender

Lavender loves Sequim and we love it. Our climate is similar to Provence, France, the Lavender capital of the world. It likes good draining soil and does not like to get it's feet wet (don't over water) which makes it a great drought tolerant plant. There are some fifty varieties of lavender growing in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley.

Lavender has been referred to as "the Swiss army knife" of herbs because it has so many uses. Using today's vocabulary, lavender is interactive.

U-pick flower of fragrance: Lavender is a wonderful flower for U-pick. Folks love to get in the middle of a field and relax, take their time and smell the variety of lavender, then pick their favorites.

  • Aromatherapy-Medicinal: Lavender has for centuries been used as a medicine to prevent infections in wounds, it soothes as a tea, and heals in creams and oils.
  • Culinary magic: For centuries great chefs have cooked with lavender as an ingredient. The French use it in breads, desserts, marinades, etc. It is an integral ingredient of the classic French seasoning, Herbs de Provence, which is a blending of various Mediterranean herbs.
  • Crafty Little Flower: Make a wand, a sachet or a wreath with this flower and you have a gift which will fragrance a memory for a lifetime. How many young women remember mom or grandma sachets? Lavender creates a cherished memory for kids and grown- ups alike.
