About Carol Janda
The 2009 Sequim Lavender Festival has chosen the watercolor "Gathering the Lavender Bundles" by local artist Carol Janda as the official festival artwork. The Festival will showcase the art on the festival's posters, t-shirts, advertising, and other promotional materials.
Carol is a Signature Member of North West Watercolor Society. She shows her work, which includes watercolor and oil paintings stoneware pottery and oil monotypes at three galleries in Port Angeles and Sequim.
The elements and Principles of Design have provided the confidence for her to find her own voice as an artist which she hopes will respectfully express the beauty of life and the world.
Work with clay began as a child growing up in Mt Savage Maryland, a brickyard town with huge dome kilns producing brick for buildings in Washington D C. Recent clay work includes press molded dragonflies, pine cones and sea life sprigged to wheel made and hand built work fired to cone 6 with her art nouveau glazes Watercolor study started with a move to teaching elementary school in Montana, marriage to a Park Service Ranger and living in the National Parks mainly Yellowstone, Glacier Bay and Olympic NP. Her realistic watercolor landscapes, seascapes, flora and abstract paintings coexist comfortably based on the Elements and Principals of Design.
The oil monotypes are produced using Plexiglas plate on an Ettan press. The plate is painted with a brayer or other tools using oil based inks and paint. Glazing very thin layers of oil paint creates exciting color relationships and allows reworking by masking out areas and adding effects with found objects, stencils or organic materials
Carol has taken workshops with Del Gish, Morris Shubin, Bob Landry, Chris Schink, Carol Barnes, Erik Weigardt, Leo Smith, Tom Nicholas, Carla O’Connor and Arne Westerman and several Clay workshops with the Potters Council.
She considers herself to be blessed with the continuous self teaching, friendships, stimulation, learning and challenge of producing art. Her website is www.claythingsplus.com .
